Mairead Burke

Mairead Burke (she/her) is a mitigation specialist in the Washington DC metro area. Since 2007, she has worked on capital cases at the trial and post-conviction levels in state and federal jurisdictions. She also provides sentencing advocacy to non-capital clients, including individuals sentenced to life in prison as juveniles.

Mairead holds a master’s degree in social work from the University of Chicago School of Social Service Administration and is a licensed clinical social worker in Maryland, the District of Columbia, and Texas. She teaches Adaptive Functioning Assessment in Mitigation Investigation, a continuing education course for social workers and mitigation specialists, and is a member of the National Alliance of Sentencing Advocates and Mitigation Specialists and the National Association of Social Workers.

Mairead’s mitigation work is informed by social work theory and her clinical experience, which includes therapy with trauma survivors, intensive case management for people living with HIV/AIDS, and emergency department care for patients in psychiatric crisis. She maintains a virtual therapy practice in Maryland, the District of Columbia, and Texas, working with adults navigating trauma, life transitions, and relational stress.
