Mairead Burke (she/her) is a mitigation specialist in the Washington DC metro area. Since 2007, she has worked on capital cases at the trial and post-conviction levels in state and federal jurisdictions. In addition to death penalty mitigation, Mairead provides sentencing advocacy to non-capital clients, including individuals sentenced to life in prison as juveniles.

Mairead holds a master’s degree in social work from the University of Chicago School of Social Service Administration and is a licensed clinical social worker in Maryland, the District of Columbia, and Texas. She has presented on mitigation investigation to professional organizations, including the Texas State Bar and the Austin Bar Association. Mairead is a member of the National Alliance of Sentencing Advocates and Mitigation Specialists and the National Association of Social Workers.

Mairead’s mitigation work is informed by social work theories, practice models, and her experience as a clinical social worker. Specifically, she has provided therapy to survivors of trauma and intensive case management to people living with HIV/AIDS. Additionally, Mairead offered care to individuals experiencing psychiatric crises as an emergency department social worker.

In addition to her mitigation practice, Mairead has a virtual therapy practice that serves clients in Maryland, Washington, DC, and Texas.
